NASA Probe Gives Insight On Solar System's Border With Interstellar Space

The US space agency previously announced that Voyager 2, the second human-made object ever to depart the solar system following its twin Voyager 1, had zipped into interstellar space on November 5, 2018 at a point more than 17.7 billion km from the sun.

Astronomers Decode Milky Way's Violent Birth In New Research

Milky Way gobbled up a galaxy one quarter of its mass 10 billion years ago in a "violent collision" that didn't fully settle for eons, astronomers said in new research published Monday. Previous studies had suggested that our home galaxy was composed of two separate sets of stars, but the precise chronology of the galactic merge remained elusive. Researchers from the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (IAC) used the Gaia space telescope to take exact measurements of the position, brightness and distance of around one million stars in the Milky Way within 6,500 light years of the Sun.

Cosmic Waves Discovery Could Unlock Mysteries Of Intergalactic Space

,br> Scientists were celebrating a groundbreaking astronomical discovery Thursday that they say could pave the way for mapping the outer reaches of the universe. An Australian-led team of international astronomers have determined for the first time the precise source of a powerful, one-off burst of cosmic radio waves. They have pinpointed it to a massive galaxy billions of light years away, with properties that upend what scientists previously thought they knew about the formation of mysterious fast radio bursts (FRBs).

'Smoke Rings' Spotted In The Ocean From Space

Scientists have discovered the equivalent of smoke-rings in the Tasman Sea which may 'suckup' small marine creatures and carry them at high speed and for long distances across the ocean. The rings were spotted by analysing sea level measurements taken from satellites together with sea surface temperature images from the same time and place.

Indian Scientists Discover 'Saraswati' — a Supercluster of Galaxies

A team of Indian astronomers has discovered an extremely large supercluster of galaxies as big as 20 million billion suns which they have named Saraswati, Pune-based Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) said on Friday.
This is one of the largest known structures in the neighbourhood of the universe, 4,000 million light-years away from Earth and roughly more than 10 billion years old, IUCAA said.
