NASA astronaut Victor Glover, who recently travelled to the International Space Station, took to Twitter on Wednesday to share a breathtaking view of the Earth from space. His first video from space offers a stunning view of the Blue Planet and, according to the astronaut, it doesn't do justice to the real thing. 
 

Asteroid, The Size Of An Airliner, May Collide With Earth's Orbit: NASA

The latest asteroid visiting the Earth's neighbourhood is within two weeks of the last one on September 24, when it zoomed past Earth at a distance of about 13,000 miles above our planet's surface.

An asteroid is likely to cross the Earth's orbit on Wednesday. NASA's asteroid monitoring centre has said that 2020 RK2 - an asteroid - is likely to cross the Earth's orbit but it will be about 2,380,000 miles away from our planet. The space research agency believes the asteroid is unlikely to cause any damage.

Air pollution over northern India has plummeted to a 20-year-low for this time of the year, according to satellite data published by US space agency National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
The US space agency's satellite sensors observed aerosol levels at a 20-year low post the countrywide lockdown, implemented to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.

"We knew we would see changes in atmospheric composition in many places during the lockdown," said Pawan Gupta, a Universities Space Research Association (USRA) scientist at NASA''s Marshall Space Flight Center. "But I have never seen aerosol values so low in the Indo-Gangetic Plain at this time of year," added Mr Gupta.

The Earth Has a Second Moon, And No One Noticed All This While

Researchers have discovered that an object, now dubbed 2020 CD3, has been gravitationally bound to earth for about three years now. And it is only now that we have discovered it. It was on February 19 that astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona spotted a dim object moving quickly across the sky somewhere close to earth. The same object was then observed by researchers at six more observatories around the world who confirmed the presence of what can now be considered a minimoon. The researchers say the new and perhaps temporary minimoon is probably between 1.9 meters and 3.5 metres across, which is around the same size as a mid-size car.

Astronomers say that the new minimoon orbit isn’t stable, and the 2020 CD3 could eventually catapult itself away from Earth. “It is heading away from the Earth-moon system as we speak,” says Grigori Fedorets at Queen’s University Belfast in the UK, told the New Scientist. Incidentally, this isn’t the first-time earth has had an additional moon, albeit temporarily. In 2006, the 2006 RH120 remained within the earth’s gravitational pull between September 2006 and June 2007 before it managed to wriggle free. Chances are, this minimoon will too.

Citizens of UAE were left puzzled after a mysterious hole appeared in the sky over the city of Al Ain this Sunday. A video of the incident shows a huge circle in the sky, and is currently being shared widely online. The truth is out there. And past that is a cluster of planets 3.8 billion light-years away, a recent discovery that if confirmed could extend the boundary of what we know about the universe.

Using data from a NASA X-ray laboratory in space, Xinyu Dai, an astrophysicist and professor at the University of Oklahoma, detected, for the first time ever, a population of planets beyond the Milky Way galaxy. The mass of the planets range in size from Earth's moon to the massive Jupiter, our solar system's biggest planet.

There are few methods to determine the existence of distant planets. They are so far away that no telescope can observe them, Dai told The Washington Post. So Dai and his postdoctoral researcher Eduardo Guerras relied on a scientific principle to make the discovery: Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

Global Warming: NASA Tool Reveals Mangalore Will Flood Sooner Than Mumbai, New York

NASA data has shown that Karnataka’s Mangalore city will flood first if the levels of sea rises due to melting of glaciers as a result of global warming. A report said that the sea level at Mangalore will rise by 15.98 cm compared to 15.26 cm in Mumbai and 10.65 cm in New York in the next 100 years. It is believed that Mumbai and New York are the most vulnerable cities, however, the new finding has put forward an alternative theory. The findings are based on NASA’s gradient fingerprint mapping (GFM), which is developed by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab. The tool helps them analyse data as to how much rise in sea level will be cause by the melting of glaciers. “This is the first time our method will enable planners and engineers to retrieve data about sea level in their area, and get updated numbers when new data about glacial melting becomes available,” Surendra Adhikari, a co-author of the study, told Hindustan Times on Thursday. Glaciers– that hold 75 per cent of world’s freshwater– are melting at a brisk place due to global warming. The rate is not constant due to gravity, the “push-pull influence” of ice, the wobble of the planet. Rising sea level will erode coasts and can cause flooding. Sea level will rise by 0.51-1.31 m by the end of the century. Mumbai and Kolkata are the most vulnerable coastal cities as people living their have the biggest threat of losing their lives.
